34th Historical Fair - October 22, 2005The 34th Historical Fair was a success. Thanks to great coverage in the Opelika-Auburn News and word of mouth, this year has been the largest in the fair's history. As always, the volunteers at the cook house did a phenominal job, and most of Lee County is still talking about the Sweet Potato Biscuits. Charles H. Mitchell was the chairman of the fair and the society had over 150 volunteers help! This year there were several additions to the demonstrations. A moonshine still, confiscated in the earlier 1970's, was discovered a few years ago in the museum. Last year, a few people were contacted to get the still in working order. This year the still was setup and actually distilled water during the fair. Next year, the Thumper will be added to the demonstration. A lot of very interesting stories (as well as recipies) were told around the site! A 1930 Model A was on loan from a member of the society. It was driven to the site with the help of Mr. Greg Stringfellow of Lucedale, MS. On the day of the fair, every so often you could hear the audible AHOOOOGA! This was quite a fun sound to hear (unless you were standing in front of the car!). The Lee County Historical Society would like to thank all those who attend the fair and who made the fair possible. We hope that next year the fair will be even better. | Pictures from the fair | | Robert Campbell manning the still | | John Ross preparing corn meal | | Old Nancy | | Weaving | | Grinding corn | | 1930 Model A Tudor Sedan | | Crowds at the gate to enter. | | Pete Dunaway demonstrating Creek life in Alabama. | | John Sugg making stew for fair day. | | Pottery | | Tatting | | Guest enjoying the food. | | Quilting Guild demonstrating inside the museum. | | Wonderful demonstrations of frontier life. | | Spinning demonstration. | | Demonstration of the newest acquired items to the museum (19th century washing machine). |
